Subversion /n/ (from Latin subvertere 'overthrow'): refers to a process by which the values and principles of a system in place are contradicted or reversed in an attempt to sabotage the established social order and its structures of power, authority, tradition, hierarchy, and social norms.

Subversion allows for a bad-actor to gain short term benefits for themselves & constituents at the cost of the constituency of society through eroding the many characteristics of society which most common citizens expect mutual cooperation. Common methods are manipulating the variable interpretations of inherent social norms or rules under the pretense of plausible deniability:

"C'mon man. It's perfectly legal. Trust me bro."

Depending on the objective(s), the strategy can be scaled from the individual level, to the state government level, to global organizations separate from the notion of statehood, and are virtually always variably communicable across different stratas of the structural scale. The Characteristic Variability and Scale of Subversion changes depending on these objectives:

1. Fighting the system
2. Controlling the system
3. Reinventing the system
4. Becoming the system
5. Money
6. Personal Issues (most commonly revenge)

It can more-or-less can be a form of betrayal, although creative subversion often couples with covert or clandestine measures to diffuse accountability of the actor and conspiratorial constituents unless otherwise intended or discovered.

Historically, subversion has been symbolized as the Trojan Horse. Machiavellianism is a quintessential feature of Subversion, as the longer, faster, and thoroughly the bad actor accumulates trust, the higher the potential for damage becomes. If the identity and reputation of a system becomes damaged, the effects tend to result in a chain reaction of the common societal constituents either becoming inspired or feeling pressured to resort to subversion out of indifference, survival, and/or revenge.
